چکیده

The paper by Senator Edward M. Kennedy, which follows directly, is one of a series of lectures sponsored by the Medical Student Council. The Lectureship, instituted early in 1974, was designed to bring outstanding teachers of medicine and leaders in public health to the Yale University School of Medicine. This program was organized entirely by medical students on behalf of the student body. The Lectureship will be continued in coming years, and it is expected that forthcoming lectures will appear in the Yale Journal ofBiology and Medicine. Senator Kennedy, Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Health, and Chairman of the Office of Technology Assessment, is a Congressional advocate of health care legislation for national health insurance and, most recently, health manpower the topic of his present address. His talk at Yale includes an unequivocal challenge to American academic medicine to work actively and constructively with his Subcommittee in the planning of new health programs and laws, inasmuch as they will inevitably affect the teaching and practice of medicine as we now know them. We hope that the medical community, especially at Yale, will make a positive response.
